Dr. Peter McAllister, Director, School of Music pointed out that they are an

Position Summary  

Repairs, tunes, voices and regulates action, and may rebuild vertical and
grand pianos using specialized tools and instruments in accordance with
professional standards and procedures. May present lectures to classes on
piano tuning and related subjects.

Duties and Responsibilities  

* Tunes and voices instruments to achieve the highest level of musical
performance; demonstrates discretion and judgment relative to the artistic
needs of faculty, students, and visiting artists; provides support for
instruments in connection with evening and weekend performances. 
* Tunes pianos using forks, hammers and electronic tuning devices. 
* Locates and corrects defects in keyboard, pedals and action assembly.
Replaces broken or missing wires. 
* Regulates and adjusts piano actions accurately to specifications or alters
scientifically to facilitate optimum performance. 
* Confers with faculty members, students and guest artists about individual
tuning and special needs for the piano prior to concerts. 
* Performs emergency repairs and tuning during concerts and recitals as
needed. 
* Maintains records on piano repairs and tuning. 
* Restores instruments, including analyzing, re-scaling, and redesigning
piano components beyond normal factory specifications; rebuilds instruments
to include all aspects of sound board, wrestplank, bridge, and complete
action mechanism replacement. 
* Maintains a database for inventory control and service schedules. 
* Moves pianos to different locations as needed.   


Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications  

Five years of experience as a Piano Technician with a proven record of
concert experience, and certified by the American Guild of Piano Tuners
within six (6) months of employment; OR, Any equivalent combination of
experience, training and/or education.   


Additional Minimum Qualifications  

  


Preferred Qualifications  

* Knowledge of institutional settings. 
* Knowledge of Steinway and Sons manufacturing and service procedures. 
* Knowledge of and skill in tuning, voicing, repairing and action regulation
of various piano models and brands. 
* Knowledge of basic computer software. 
* Skill in use of piano technician tools such as tuning forks, electronic
tuning devices and tuning hammers. 
* Skill in both verbal and written communication. 
* Skill in leading the activities of self and others. 
* Ability to fine tune aurally.
