I found that usually it helps (or at least they are less offended) if 
there is a simple policy that makes it inappropriate to consider 
anything smaller than studio uprights, or older than ____.   ......  
Still, we did end up with one Sohmer console- but that's ok I guess.  We 
also had a major donor in the past who wanted their gift of a 19th odd 
wood-framed upright with no plate at all (forgotten name) to be restored 
for a "prominent" location in our hall.  I suggested the local Schubert 
Club keyboard museum might be a better home, and no less "prominent".  
That gift resides somewhere in the back of one of our dorm chapels.
