[CAUT] hammer softener

I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried using just a couple drops of that 
softener in shoulders up near the strike area on say,  about 4 year old 
S&S  D hammers that are beginning to lose the warmth we once so loved.  
.?    Haven't had the courage, but sounds tempting.
