Conrad- don't you think you should teach a course in "crane implemented piano moving" instead of schlepping off from the convention this year? les barteltt -----Original Message----- From: caut-bounces at ptg.org [mailto:caut-bounces at ptg.org] On Behalf Of Conrad Hoffsommer Sent: Saturday, June 03, 2006 7:48 AM To: College and University Technicians Subject: Re: [CAUT] Piano Techs as Piano Movers? As the result of a totally mis-spent youth, I have heavy equipment rigging experience. Truly a DON'T-TRY-THIS-AT-HOME scene, but crane operator had no idea of piano balance points. As a result, when a donor offered his D, the powers that be sent me to fetch it. Donor hired the crane, but I strapped the beastie to a skid, slung it on the hook and waited for a big noise after the piano cleared the 7th floor balcony... Yes, there was a TV crew there. Yes, it made the Des Moines local news that night, and the paper the next day. And, yes, the piano now shares the recital hall stage with our surface transported Hamburg D. Back to the original scenario prompting this thread - We also did the new carpet/painting bit a few years ago. Student and grounds crew backs and arms, my supervision, 2x4s and moving blankets for the hallway storage. Hardest part of the move way was making sure the Dampp-Chaser tanks were empty... Department head made mistake of cruising by during the process - I had him carry a couple legs... ;-} Conrad Hoffsommer Early to rise: early to bed; Makes a man healthy, and socially dead. -- No virus found in this incoming message.
