I have no idea which one would be the more expensive or arduous. =20 :-( JeffO =20 ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Jim Busby <mailto:jim_busby@byu.edu> =20 To: College and University Technicians <mailto:caut@ptg.org> =20 Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2006 10:01 AM Subject: RE: [CAUT] disability insurance =20 Jeff, =20 How much does "disability insurance" cost? What does it cover? Would Brent Fischer have been covered for his hearing loss? It brings a lot of questions to mind. =20 BTW, The LDS Church hasn't gone to fingerprinting, but they are now requiring "two deep leadership" which means that no adult can be alone with a minor. (It's not world wide, yet.) Also, there is a policy being considered that no adult may sit a kid on his/her lap. That will certainly make the nursery (1-3 years old) challenging when a kid falls and needs holding by the "mom" that is in the nursery. Ridiculous! A shame. (Although, if my kid had been molested I might feel different.) =20 On a different note, Dan Levitan says that many people in NY are preferring women piano technicians over men because they don't want some strange man in their house. I may sound a bit bitter because I went through the same thing -- UCD informed they would require those things. I politely said "Fine, but of course I'll need to charge you accordingly." =20 Jim, Jeff, Wim, all, It is my understanding that since the lawsuits broke out against the Catholic church over child molestation, that there are now seminars for lawyers to attend to learn how to sue churches. We now have to agree to federal background checks just to teach sunday school to children. So, I am convinced that churches are requiring this kind of protection for anyone who might come under their roof while a child or anyone else who could be a victim of any kind of malicious intent is present. It is indeed a different world. Will church members start having to carry liability insurance to attend services? =20 Not sure I understand the workman's comp requirement, though. =20 I do invest the few extra dollars per paycheck for the extended disability coverage. The state covers short term disabiliity. I used to sell insurance, and I think it is a smart few bucks to spend. We once were taught that statistics are that you are 7 times more likely to become disabled than to die prematurely. =20 If you're looking at that highly advertised product, I'd do some shopping around. That duck costs a lot of money and its got to come from somewhere. =20 Jeff =20 =20 =09 Jeff Tanner, RPT University of South Carolina =20 =20 =20 ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
