Like many other state school, U of Alabama is also self insured. But we use an independent appraiser to detirmine what kind of damage was done.  Then the sttae comes up with the money to fix it. In our case, several years ago when the D was vandalized, we were able to get the apprasier to "total" the piano, and combined with some other money we had available, got enough money from the state to buy a new D. Then we "bought" the piano back from the state for wholesale, and I fixed it.
