Metal contracts when it cools, so the pitch goes sharp. Of course, the reverse is true as well; a fact which I learned in a painful manner not too long after I had gotten a Tacky-tuner & had gotten overly confident in its ability to match 2 instruments. 2 Bozo Imperials got stuck in a trailer overnight in a mid-west winter & got to the venue about an hour or so before the concert. They were hanging & focussing lights while I was tuning. Buzzed through one & then went on to the other, finishing just before concert time. Didn't really have time to go back & check the 1st one.....I think you can guess the rest.....wasn't enough room under the chair for a fatboy like me, so I endured it until intermission when I could get up there & clean up the 1st piano. By that time both of them had warmed up & changed considerably, but at least I could make them acceptable for the 2nd half of the program. Fortunately it was an out-of-the-way venue, & the duo-piano team was very understanding -- they were driving the rig that had broken down -- & we kept in contact for some years after that.
