Usually, the damage is caused by inserting the wedge mutes or temp. strips 
while the felt is still down in the strings.  Bit by bit, the felt is pulled 
loose by the first lift after the mutes are in place.  The fix is to always have 
the damper out of the strings when any muting is installed.  I have found that 
the dampers will often work well after having the damaged part removed, but 
if the same muting procedures continue, the problem will return.
