Isaac,
I worked on one of these in my early days as an apprentice. My
mentor seemed to know about them, as a big US Army post (Fort Ord) was right
next door and his father had been in the piano repair business starting
before WWII. Steinway made these at the request of the armed forces each in
a different color depending on the service: olive drab for the Army, brown
for the Air Force, and blue for the Navy. Though they were in a very
simple, extra rugged case that was designed for rough conditions and usage
(even outdoors as the picture shows!) inside they were, to my best
recollection, the standard action and chassis of Steinway's 1098 of that
day. I don't know if that type of instrument has changed specs through the
years as my contact with a Steinway 1098 of that vintage has been so long
ago now. I'm guessing that action parts from the current 1098 might very
well be appropriate, but you will have to talk to Shannon Rebele in parts:
parts@steinway.com.
Feel free to jump in here anyone....
Best of luck!
