My own recollection is that it had a lot to do with precisely how tightly you screwed down on the waste end - tight enough to wrap tightly, loose enough to pull through as needed. Maybe adjust it a little as you crank. I got quite good at it at the time, but it's been a few years. I got mine from APSCO, as I remember, so maybe there are different designs out there.
