Alan, I approach the concept of floating the pitch just a bit differently. Using the parameters you've given of A438 to A442, if a piano should fall within that area, then I would do a single tuning pass, thereby floating the pitch would be accomplished. However, If the piano pitch falls outside those parameters, then I would do a pitch change and a tuning pass to bring the piano closer to A440, thereby initiating the potential use of the float concept on the next visit to the piano.
