I just did this work on a 1972 S&S D and found it to be quite easy and well worth it. The Teflon back actions have the short levers which hang down at a kind of steep angle and are out of compliance with the straight-line rule governing underlever friction on the key-end felt. If your D has had a lot of playing you will see the results of this unwanted friction as dished out areas on the key-end felt. I won't go into all the problems this can cause, but I have seen them dished out as much as 1/4" on practice room pianos here. I bought a complete back-action from Steinway ($900. I think) and installed it in 5 minutes using just a couple of balance rail punchings as shims on one side to adjust the left to right orientation. Everything else lines right up. The new back actions are the same ones installed in new pianos and have no springs in the bass section. Steinway says pianists seem to prefer the way these feel. I strongly urge you to replace it at this time.
