Regarding the ensemble, the long time (I think original, founding)
concert-master, Guillermo Figueroa, just left the orchestra this year to
take a job as conductor of the New Mexico Symphony. Fine violinist, fine
conductor. The ensemble is no doubt adjusting to new personnel.
Concertmaster generally functions as de facto conductor (giving
down-beats, establishing bowing for strings, lots of other stuff) in
conductor-less orchestras, and even to an extent in orchestras with
conductors.
