Friends - I spoke with David Miller a short while ago. He had learned of Newton's passing from the Chair of the Dance Department at Rutgers, who was friendly with Newton and his former wife, Jean. He knows only that Newton died at home, earlier this week. He asked me to relay this information, as he is not presently at his computer. He promised to forward to us any information that becomes available to him. Newton was my portal into the guild. I took my tuning exam at his home in NYC (before he wandered off to Texas) and, as my children's school was on his old block - 93rd St., between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues - I found myself inescapably thinking of him almost daily, even if just to think, "That's Newton's house". Of course, being who I am, my shock at the news was instantaneously followed by regret and guilt for having allowed myself the luxury of thinking that, as soon as things got a little less pressured, I would try to get together with him. My sense of loss is personal and professional. Whether Newton truly started this list, or was one of the first (August 1994), his voice, and influence are pervasive.
