Broken TP

The tuning pin extractor currently on the market has a tendency to
break off where the tuning lever fits. If the pin is really tight,
you may have to really heat the pin pretty hot to get it out. A good
percentage of that Baldwin block is a resin that will soften when
heated.

To heat the pin without setting the piano on fire, clamp a small pair
of vise-grip pliers onto the broken end of the pin and heat the
pliers with a butane torch. The flame can be directed side-ways onto
the pliers and away from the piano itself. The heat will be
conducted to the pin. Watch out for smoke, as that pin will get hot
enough to scorch the wood.

Be prepared before you start heating. You need a hot pad to quickly remove the
pliers and the tuning pin extractor handy. Work while the pin is
still hot, and don't touch the pin! OUCH!
