I gotsta agree with David on this.  Since I often make automotive 
references when describing piano stuff to my customers, let me use one here.

Do you think that when they are hiring engine mechanics for Indianapolis, 
they make racing a requirement?

The mechanic's job is to prepare the car so that the racer can race.   The 
piano technician's job is to prepare the piano so the performer can 
interpret the music without the instrument getting in the way.

It's a team thing.  It's a communication thing.  Cross-training is nice, 
but not necessary.
