Spray some into a plastic deli cup (the kind you get potato salad in). Wear rubber gloves and do this outside, it's kind of messy. Take a chunk of felt, stick it to the end of a hammer shank and use it like a marker. It covers great and is a lot cheaper than markers. I saw them doing something similar in the basement at Steinway Hall. He used shellac and dye. This might be better if you think you will want to remove it in the future.
