I don't know if anyone mentioned this but S&S uses a spline
to tie the keybed pieced together.  Could this be a source?

If you push a key down and hold it you can knock the key
hard and listen without the strings sounding.  Helps with
diagnostics.

Horace's suggestions are really good ones.
