I usually do my own tail shaping with 80 grit paper, leave it at that level of roughness and have not had any problem with checking. I also replace the backcheck leather so that the tail is going against the when it checks. I think this helps to hold the hammer in check. I also like the idea of listing ones' University association with posts.
